Deep Breath: A Jalapeno Cocktail

Take a deep breath and enjoy this tasty blend of mezcal and vodka.

Jalapeno mezcal cocktail

Deep Breath

We have long established I am a self-proclaimed “Hooch Mama” (as opposed to a Wine-o or a Beer Broad)! Last year I found the liquor that I have become an outright “Easy Hooch Mama” for. Total Sucker. Will order any cocktail in any bar shaken, mixed or stirred with this smoky and deep libation.
Mezcal
Made primarily in Oaxaca, Mezcal is like Tequila in a way but way better (and I’m not really a tequila girl at all). It’s where the heart (looks a bit like a pineapple) of the agave plant is cooked in an earthen pit and gains a smoky flavor. I love this part. It’s so smoky and amazing. And though you think it would be heavy like cognac or whiskey but it blends perfectly with citrus and herbs for bright and light cocktails. Only you want to take a “Deep Breath” to savor and live in that cocktail goodness moment. Told you, I’m a total sucker…

Today’s cocktail muddles fresh Hothouse cucumbers (the only kid worth buying at the grocery store, FYI), mint, lime juice, and house-made jalapeno simple syrup. {For more on how to make different kinds of simple syrups, check out these cocktails: Rosemary Rush, Summertime Lemonade Martini, and Bright Lights Big Citadelle.} Strain the muddles mixture and stir in Tito’s Vodka and Fidencio Mezcal. Served over a large ice cube, it’s a big cocktail! You’ll need to take a “Deep Breath” between sips, but we like it that way right? If you want it a little less potent (as she whispers lightweights under her breath), simply shake it with ice in a cocktail strainer before pouring over the big ice cube.

Deep Breath

You’ll need to take a “Deep Breath” between sips, but we like it that way right?

Ingredients

    Cocktail
  • 2 inch chunk of hothouse cucumber, chopped
  • 4-6 mint leaves
  • 1 ½ oz jalapeno simple syrup
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 4 dashes orange bitters
  • 2 oz Vodka (I used Tito’s Vodka)
  • 1 oz Mezcal (I used Fidencio)
    Jalapeno Simple Syrup
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 small jalapeno, sliced seeds remaining

Instructions

    Cocktail
  • Place cucumber, mint, simple syrup and lime juice in a cup and muddle together well, crushing the mint and cucumber.
  • Strain into a glass filled with bitters, vodka, and mescal.
  • Stir well and pour over 1 large ice cube in a highball glass. Garnish with cucumber slices.
    Jalapeno Simple Syrup
  • Bring sugar and water to a boil in a small pot.
  • Add jalapeno and stir to dissolve sugar. Turn off heat and allow to cool.
  • Once cool, strain syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a bottle or mason jar using a funnel. Chill for up to 3 weeks.
